First Impressions

Reservas Especiales Moscatel Ambrosia Sherry / Romate arrives at £45.75 for 75cl, and at this price point, expectations are rightly elevated. Romate's Ambrosia Moscatel is a nectar-like sweet wine with buckets of fruit. Very rich, more aromatic though not quite as syrupy in texture compared to Pedro Ximenez, this will pair wel

Spain's wine renaissance has seen traditional regions rediscovering their identity while new-wave producers push boundaries with indigenous varieties. Romate is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers deep and concentrated with notes of Christmas cake, molasses, roasted coffee, and aged wood. Moving to the palate, the wine is sweet and complex with raisin, toffee, and orange marmalade flavours, lifted by a fine oxidative tang. The finish is exceptionally long, with dried fruit, caramel, and a warming spirit presence that lingers beautifully.

Food Pairing and Serving

Outstanding with blue cheese, dark chocolate, nuts, or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner pour. Serve slightly chilled at 12–14°C.

The Verdict

Reservas Especiales Moscatel Ambrosia Sherry / Romate earns a well-deserved 8 out of 10. This is an outstanding fortified that delivers Pedro Ximenez, Moscatel with genuine conviction and craft. At £45.75, this is a serious wine that justifies the investment. Whether you're building a cellar or simply looking for something excellent to drink tonight, this bottle earns its place.

Had a glass of this at a Spanish restaurant and couldn't stop thinking about it. Finally found a bottle online. It smells incredible — like a really good fruitcake with coffee — and the taste delivers on that. Goes forever on the finish too. My new go-to for after dinner.

I've been getting into sherries lately and this is one of the best I've tried. The concentration is unreal — dark molasses, dried fruit, toffee — but it never feels like it's just sugar water. That little tang keeps you coming back for more. Poured it for friends after dinner and everyone wanted to know what it was.

Celeste Moreno VIPsAllowed - Good but too sweet for my taste
6/10

I normally drink dry wines so this was way outside my comfort zone. The toffee and raisin flavours are well done and I can see why people rate it, but it's just not my thing. My partner loved it though so at least the bottle didn't go to waste. The warmth from the 18% is actually quite pleasant.

Picked this up for Christmas Eve and it was brilliant with stilton and some dark chocolate. The sweetness is there but it's not sticky sweet if that makes sense — there's a sharpness to it that balances everything out. The Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel blend really works.

Bought this for my dad's birthday and we ended up sharing the whole bottle after dinner. The dried fruit and toffee thing is real — it's like liquid Christmas cake. Absolutely loved it, and the finish just goes on and on. Worth every penny at £45.

Jason Steel VIPsAllowed - Nice but a bit much for me
7/10

Had this at a friend's dinner party and it was good, just very intense. The raisin and caramel flavours are lovely but I found it a bit heavy after a small glass. At 18% you definitely feel the warmth too. Would probably have it with cheese or something rich next time.

Marianne Blom VIPsAllowed - Great dessert wine find

The guy at my local wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted something sweet but not boring. He was spot on. There's this orange marmalade note that stops it being too cloying, and the coffee undertone is a nice surprise. Really interesting bottle.

Ingrid Holm VIPsAllowed - Bit pricey for what it is
7/10

It's a solid fortified wine, no doubt. Nice long finish with the caramel and dried fruit. But £45 is a lot when you can get decent PX sherries for half that. I'd buy it again on special occasion but not as a regular thing.
