Reservas Especiales Moscatel Ambrosia Sherry / Romate: Rich Heritage in a Glass
Fortified 18% ABV ABV RomateSaw this on a menu and tracked it down
Had a glass of this at a Spanish restaurant and couldn't stop thinking about it. Finally found a bottle online. It smells incredible — like a really good fruitcake with coffee — and the taste delivers on that. Goes forever on the finish too. My new go-to for after dinner.
Stunning sherry, total showstopper
I've been getting into sherries lately and this is one of the best I've tried. The concentration is unreal — dark molasses, dried fruit, toffee — but it never feels like it's just sugar water. That little tang keeps you coming back for more. Poured it for friends after dinner and everyone wanted to know what it was.
Good but too sweet for my taste
I normally drink dry wines so this was way outside my comfort zone. The toffee and raisin flavours are well done and I can see why people rate it, but it's just not my thing. My partner loved it though so at least the bottle didn't go to waste. The warmth from the 18% is actually quite pleasant.
Perfect with the cheeseboard
Picked this up for Christmas Eve and it was brilliant with stilton and some dark chocolate. The sweetness is there but it's not sticky sweet if that makes sense — there's a sharpness to it that balances everything out. The Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel blend really works.
Christmas in a glass
Bought this for my dad's birthday and we ended up sharing the whole bottle after dinner. The dried fruit and toffee thing is real — it's like liquid Christmas cake. Absolutely loved it, and the finish just goes on and on. Worth every penny at £45.
Nice but a bit much for me
Had this at a friend's dinner party and it was good, just very intense. The raisin and caramel flavours are lovely but I found it a bit heavy after a small glass. At 18% you definitely feel the warmth too. Would probably have it with cheese or something rich next time.
Great dessert wine find
The guy at my local wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted something sweet but not boring. He was spot on. There's this orange marmalade note that stops it being too cloying, and the coffee undertone is a nice surprise. Really interesting bottle.
Bit pricey for what it is
It's a solid fortified wine, no doubt. Nice long finish with the caramel and dried fruit. But £45 is a lot when you can get decent PX sherries for half that. I'd buy it again on special occasion but not as a regular thing.
