First Impressions

Lindisfarne Dark Mead arrives at £13.50, and at this price, it needs to offer genuine quality to stand out in a crowded market. 70cl / 14.5% - The dark variant of the famous Lindisfarne Mead, made only on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, England. This version is a vatted.

English winemaking has come of age, with producers demonstrating that the country's chalky soils and cool climate can yield wines of genuine quality and character. Lindisfarne is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers complex bouquet of candied peel, cinnamon, and dried fruit, with a saline mineral edge. Moving to the palate, the wine is silky and intense with fig, raisin, and coffee notes, underpinned by well-judged sweetness. The finish is long and complex close with raisin, walnut, and a pleasingly dry tannic grip.

Food Pairing and Serving

Wonderful with strong cheeses, charcuterie, or dark chocolate desserts. Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C for lighter styles, or at room temperature for richer expressions.

The Verdict

Lindisfarne Dark Mead earns a well-deserved 7 out of 10. This is a very good fortified that delivers Honey Wine with genuine conviction and craft. At £13.50, this represents excellent value for money. Whether you are building a cellar or simply looking for something excellent to drink tonight, this bottle earns its place.

Henrik Larsen VIPsAllowed - Nice but a bit niche
6/10

Got this as a birthday present from someone who knows I like trying unusual drinks. It's decent — the cinnamon and dried fruit flavours are lovely and it's well made. But at 14.5% and that sweetness level I could only manage a small glass before it felt like enough. Not sure I'd spend £13.50 on it myself when I could get a solid port for similar money.

Saw this recommended online and thought why not. It's proper cosy — all candied peel and warm spices, kind of like a fancy mulled wine but smoother. The dry finish surprised me, you don't get that sticky teeth feeling at all. Not something I'd drink every week but perfect for a cold evening by the fire.

Picked this up at the Lindisfarne gift shop on a trip to Holy Island and honestly didn't expect much. But wow — it's like liquid Christmas cake with that fig and spice thing going on. The finish is surprisingly dry too, not the sticky sweet mess I was expecting from mead. At £13.50 it's a proper souvenir that I'd actually buy again.

Ayako Hirano VIPsAllowed - Really interesting but not for everyone

My partner bought this as a curiosity and we cracked it open after dinner. It's genuinely good — rich and warming with raisin and a coffee-ish depth that caught me off guard. Definitely one to sip slowly though, and I could see some people finding it too sweet even though it's actually fairly restrained. Would be great with a cheese board.

Isla McCallister VIPsAllowed - Way better than tourist mead
8/10

I've had cheap mead before and hated it so I was sceptical about this one. Completely different league. There's a walnut and raisin thing on the finish that's genuinely complex and it's got this almost salty edge that stops it being one-note sweet. Served it at a dinner party and everyone wanted to know what it was.
