First Impressions

Taylor's 2009 Vintage Port arrives at £87.50, positioning it in the mid-to-premium bracket where quality must shine. 75cl / 20.5% - The 2009-vintage Taylor's Port is made from a harvest notable for its low yield. Aromas of black cherries, raspberries, blackberries, plum and clean minerals fill.

Portugal's wine scene extends far beyond port, with producers crafting increasingly refined expressions that showcase the country's unique terroir and grape varieties. Taylor's is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers deep nose of prune, molasses, and roasted almond, with a thread of sea salt and iodine. Moving to the palate, the wine is full and warming, delivering prune, butterscotch, and toasted nut with excellent balance. The finish is incredibly long finish with dried fruit, nut, and a warming spice that lingers beautifully.

Food Pairing and Serving

Wonderful with strong cheeses, charcuterie, or dark chocolate desserts. Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C for lighter styles, or at room temperature for richer expressions.

The Verdict

Taylor's 2009 Vintage Port earns a well-deserved 7 out of 10. This is a very good fortified that delivers Touriga Nacional with genuine conviction and craft. At £87.50, the quality-to-price ratio here is genuinely impressive. Whether you are building a cellar or simply looking for something excellent to drink tonight, this bottle earns its place.

Farah Abboud VIPsAllowed - Interesting salty edge
7/10

Picked this up on holiday in Porto and finally cracked it open last weekend. What surprised me was this almost salty, mineral quality on the nose — not what I expected from a port at all. The dried fruit and spice on the finish just kept going and going. Good stuff, would buy again if it wasn't £87.

I don't know loads about port but I know what I like and this is unreal. So rich and warming without being sickly sweet. The toasted nut flavour is my favourite bit. Saw it on a menu at a restaurant and then tracked down a bottle for home.

Astrid Nilsen VIPsAllowed - Perfect after dinner
7/10

The guy at the wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted something special for a dinner party. It's proper old-school vintage port — big prune and molasses flavours, really coats your mouth. Went brilliantly with stilton and walnuts at the end of the meal.

Opened this on Christmas day and it was the star of the show. Really rich and pruney with this lovely butterscotch thing going on. Everyone kept going back for another glass, even my dad who normally only drinks beer. The finish goes on forever, genuinely timed it at over a minute.

Got this as a birthday present and it's a solid port, no question. Dark fruit, nutty, warming — ticks the boxes. But at nearly ninety quid I think you can find something just as good for less. Would I buy it myself? Probably not.

Luna Chavez VIPsAllowed - Touriga Nacional does the heavy lifting
8/10

I've been getting into port lately and this is a great example of what Touriga Nacional brings to the blend. Real structure and backbone but still smooth. That almond and butterscotch combo on the palate is gorgeous. At 20.5% you'd expect it to be hot but it carries the alcohol really well.

Celeste Moreno VIPsAllowed - Decent, expected more for the price
6/10

It's a well-made port for sure — nice dark fruit, good balance, long finish. But I've had ports at half the price that I enjoyed just as much. Maybe I'm not experienced enough to appreciate the vintage difference. Shared it with mates over a cheese board and nobody complained though.
