Taylor's 2009 Vintage Port: A Sip of History
Fortified 20.5% ABV ABV Taylor'sInteresting salty edge
Picked this up on holiday in Porto and finally cracked it open last weekend. What surprised me was this almost salty, mineral quality on the nose — not what I expected from a port at all. The dried fruit and spice on the finish just kept going and going. Good stuff, would buy again if it wasn't £87.
Blown away honestly
I don't know loads about port but I know what I like and this is unreal. So rich and warming without being sickly sweet. The toasted nut flavour is my favourite bit. Saw it on a menu at a restaurant and then tracked down a bottle for home.
Perfect after dinner
The guy at the wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted something special for a dinner party. It's proper old-school vintage port — big prune and molasses flavours, really coats your mouth. Went brilliantly with stilton and walnuts at the end of the meal.
Christmas day winner
Opened this on Christmas day and it was the star of the show. Really rich and pruney with this lovely butterscotch thing going on. Everyone kept going back for another glass, even my dad who normally only drinks beer. The finish goes on forever, genuinely timed it at over a minute.
Nice but steep price
Got this as a birthday present and it's a solid port, no question. Dark fruit, nutty, warming — ticks the boxes. But at nearly ninety quid I think you can find something just as good for less. Would I buy it myself? Probably not.
Touriga Nacional does the heavy lifting
I've been getting into port lately and this is a great example of what Touriga Nacional brings to the blend. Real structure and backbone but still smooth. That almond and butterscotch combo on the palate is gorgeous. At 20.5% you'd expect it to be hot but it carries the alcohol really well.
Decent, expected more for the price
It's a well-made port for sure — nice dark fruit, good balance, long finish. But I've had ports at half the price that I enjoyed just as much. Maybe I'm not experienced enough to appreciate the vintage difference. Shared it with mates over a cheese board and nobody complained though.
