First Impressions

Barbadillo Palo Cortado Obispo Gascon (half bottle) arrives at £24.95, and at this price, it needs to offer genuine quality to stand out in a crowded market. 37.5cl / 21.5% - Palo Cortado sherry is one of the specialities of Bodegas Barbadillo, and this fragrant version is bottled from the fifth criadera (tier) of their eight criadera.

Spain continues to surprise and delight, with traditional styles being elevated by a new generation of producers who balance heritage with innovation. Barbadillo is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers warm and inviting aromas of butterscotch, dried apricot, and toasted hazelnut. Moving to the palate, the wine is silky and intense with fig, raisin, and coffee notes, underpinned by well-judged sweetness. The finish is incredibly long finish with dried fruit, nut, and a warming spice that lingers beautifully.

Food Pairing and Serving

Wonderful with strong cheeses, charcuterie, or dark chocolate desserts. Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C for lighter styles, or at room temperature for richer expressions.

The Verdict

Barbadillo Palo Cortado Obispo Gascon earns a well-deserved 7 out of 10. This is a very good fortified that delivers Palomino Fino with genuine conviction and craft. At £24.95, this represents excellent value for money. Whether you are building a cellar or simply looking for something excellent to drink tonight, this bottle earns its place.

Ruth Banks VIPsAllowed - Great with cheese
7/10

Bought this for a dinner party and served it with a big cheese board at the end. The fig and raisin notes went perfectly with some aged manchego. 21.5% ABV so go easy — one glass and you know about it! Would buy again for the right occasion.

8/10

I always thought sherry was what your nan drank at Christmas but this completely changed my mind. It's rich and silky with this amazing finish that just goes on and on. The hazelnut and butterscotch combo is gorgeous. Genuinely one of the most interesting wines I've had this year.

Got this as part of a sherry tasting we did with friends. It's well made and I can see why people rate it, but the dried fruit and coffee flavours are a bit much for me. I prefer something lighter. My mate who's more into fortified wines thought it was brilliant though.

7/10

Been getting into fortified wines lately and this is a decent one for the price. The dried apricot on the nose is really nice and there's a coffee bitterness mid-palate that stops it being too sweet. Not the most complex palo cortado I've tried but at under £25 it's hard to complain. Palomino Fino doing its thing.

Picked this up after the guy in the wine shop said it was one of his favourites. Really glad I did — the butterscotch and nutty thing going on is lovely, and it just keeps going after you swallow. At £25 it's not an everyday buy but it feels worth it for something a bit special.
