Barbadillo Palo Cortado Obispo Gascon: A Sip of History
Fortified 21.5% ABV ABV BarbadilloGreat with cheese
Bought this for a dinner party and served it with a big cheese board at the end. The fig and raisin notes went perfectly with some aged manchego. 21.5% ABV so go easy — one glass and you know about it! Would buy again for the right occasion.
Why have I been ignoring sherry??
I always thought sherry was what your nan drank at Christmas but this completely changed my mind. It's rich and silky with this amazing finish that just goes on and on. The hazelnut and butterscotch combo is gorgeous. Genuinely one of the most interesting wines I've had this year.
Interesting but not really my thing
Got this as part of a sherry tasting we did with friends. It's well made and I can see why people rate it, but the dried fruit and coffee flavours are a bit much for me. I prefer something lighter. My mate who's more into fortified wines thought it was brilliant though.
Solid palo cortado
Been getting into fortified wines lately and this is a decent one for the price. The dried apricot on the nose is really nice and there's a coffee bitterness mid-palate that stops it being too sweet. Not the most complex palo cortado I've tried but at under £25 it's hard to complain. Palomino Fino doing its thing.
Proper Sunday evening wine
Picked this up after the guy in the wine shop said it was one of his favourites. Really glad I did — the butterscotch and nutty thing going on is lovely, and it just keeps going after you swallow. At £25 it's not an everyday buy but it feels worth it for something a bit special.
