First Impressions

Tikves Smederevka 2024 arrives at £10.75 for 75cl, and at this price, it needs to offer genuine quality to stand out in a crowded market. From the Republic of Macedonia, the Smederevka grape is an indigenous variety native to the Tikveš region. If you like Sauvignon Blanc this is a great alternative.

North Macedonia is an emerging wine region with ancient winemaking traditions, producing characterful wines from indigenous grape varieties at remarkably accessible prices. Tikves is a name worth knowing in this context.

I cannot believe this is £10.75. Bought it for my wife's birthday meal and we both loved it. Green apple and citrus flavours, really refreshing, and it just keeps going on the finish. The chalky mineral thing at the end is class. We're not massive wine people but this has got us wanting to try more from this part of the world.

It's fine. Pleasant enough white wine, bit grassy and lemony. I was expecting more from the Sauvignon Blanc side of things honestly — it's a bit restrained compared to a New Zealand Sauv Blanc. Not bad for the money though, just not my favourite style.

Bought a couple of these for a barbecue last weekend. It's light and easy drinking, good citrus flavours and not too sweet. The finish actually sticks around which surprised me. Would buy again but probably wouldn't pay much more than this for it.

Saw Tikves recommended somewhere online and thought I'd give it a go. Goes brilliantly with fish and chips weirdly enough — that lemony citrus cuts right through. Nice dry finish too. Solid everyday wine.

Had this at a friend's dinner party and immediately asked where she got it. The elderflower and passionfruit on the nose are gorgeous and it's got this creamy texture that makes it feel more expensive than it is. At 11.5% it's easy to have a couple of glasses without falling asleep on the sofa. Lovely stuff.

Picked this up from my local wine shop on a whim — never heard of Smederevka before but the guy behind the counter was raving about it. Really fresh and zingy, loads of passionfruit and lemon. For under £11 this is a steal, already went back for another bottle.
