Luigi Scavino Barolo Azelia 2019: Dark Fruit Elegance
Red 14.5% ABV ABV Luigi ScavinoGreat with steak night
Picked this up after seeing Barolo recommended for red meat and it didn't disappoint. Bright and fruity up front with a warmth that builds as you drink it. At 14.5% it's got some weight to it too. Goes brilliantly with a ribeye.
Nice but expected more punch
It's a good wine, don't get me wrong — lovely fresh red fruit and a peppery kick that I enjoyed. But for a Barolo at this price I wanted it to be a bit more full-on? Felt lighter than I expected. My partner loved it though so maybe that's just me.
Birthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present to myself and wow, really glad I did. The strawberry and red fruit thing going on is gorgeous, and it just keeps going — the finish lasts ages with this lovely warming spice. At £42.50 it's not cheap but honestly felt worth every penny for a special occasion.
Solid Barolo for the price
The wine shop guy steered me toward this when I said I wanted a decent Barolo without spending £80+. Really aromatic when you open it, kind of floral and herby. Loads of juicy red berry flavour and the tannins are there but not aggressive. Had it with a slow-cooked beef ragu and it was perfect.
Bit pricey but still enjoyed it
Saw this on a restaurant menu and then tracked down a bottle to have at home. It's nice — redcurrant and pepper flavours, long finish with some spice. But £42.50 is a lot for a midweek bottle and I've had similarly enjoyable reds for less. Would maybe save it for a special dinner.
Dinner party hero
Brought this to a dinner party and it was the bottle everyone kept going back to. There's something really inviting about the nose — roses and strawberry, sounds poncy but it genuinely smells amazing. The finish goes on forever with a dry grippy quality that I'm really into. Will be buying more.
