First Impressions

Duval-Leroy Femme de Champagne Brut Nature 2002 (magnum) arrives at £525.00, and at this price point, expectations are rightly elevated. 150cl / 12% - Only 900 magnums of this wine have been released world wide of this exceptional vintage. 2002 was considered to be the vintage of the century and is 95% Chardonnay.

France's winemaking heritage needs no introduction, but the best producers continue to find new ways to express their terroir while honouring centuries of tradition. Duval-Leroy is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers fine and persistent mousse releasing aromas of brioche, toasted almond, and citrus blossom. Moving to the palate, the wine is generous and complex, showing stone fruit, pastry cream, and a lovely toasty richness with vibrant acidity. The finish is persistent and precise, with citrus, biscuit, and a beautifully dry, mineral close.

Food Pairing and Serving

Equally at home as an aperitif or alongside seafood, sushi, or delicate canapés. Serve at 8-10°C in proper flutes or, better yet, white wine glasses to appreciate the full bouquet.

At £525.00, this sits in premium territory, and it delivers the quality to match. Saw this on the list at a restaurant and thought why not, it's been a good year. The brioche and citrus combo on the nose is unreal and the acidity keeps everything fresh even though it's a 2002. Longest finish I've ever noticed on a champagne. My wife said I wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the evening.

My partner got this as a birthday present for me because I've been getting into champagne lately. It's 100% Chardonnay and you can tell — really elegant and precise, not heavy at all. The bone dry finish is brilliant, none of that sweetness you get with cheaper fizz. Sat with it for ages and it just kept changing in the glass.

Bought this for our 20th anniversary and wow, it really delivered. The toasty, biscuity thing going on is gorgeous and it's so dry and crisp it just makes you want another glass. At £525 it's not something I'd buy every week obviously, but for a proper celebration it felt worth it.

Had this at a tasting event and it's genuinely lovely — really complex, lots of almond and pastry flavours with a zingy finish. But £525 for a bottle? I've had champagnes at half that price that I enjoyed nearly as much. If someone else is buying, absolutely say yes though.
