Warre's 1994 Vintage Port / Library Release: Amber Elegance
Fortified 20% ABV ABV Warre'sExpected more for the money
The wine shop guy talked me into this and I wanted to love it more than I did. It's nice enough — lots of prune and almond flavours — but at over a hundred quid I was expecting something more special. The long finish is impressive though, I'll give it that.
Birthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present to myself because I've always wanted to try an older port. The dark chocolate and walnut thing is real — it's like drinking a fancy dessert. That salty finish caught me off guard in the best way, kept going back for more.
Interesting but not cheap
£113 is a lot for a bottle of port let's be honest. That said, it's genuinely unlike any other port I've had. There's this weird salty edge that makes it way less sweet than you'd expect. Would I buy it again? Probably not at this price, but glad I tried it.
The sea salt note is unreal
I've been drinking port for years and never tasted anything quite like this. That saline quality cuts through all the sweetness and makes it so drinkable — I could not believe how fresh a 30 year old wine could taste. The finish just goes on and on. Genuinely special bottle.
Solid aged port
I'm still learning about port but I know I liked this. It's rich and nutty with a really long aftertaste. My partner said it tasted like Christmas cake, which honestly isn't far off. Good stuff, just wish it was a bit cheaper.
Touriga Nacional doing its thing
Saw this on a restaurant menu and couldn't resist trying a glass of something from '94. Dense and brooding with layers of dark fruit and molasses, but what got me was the almost mineral, salty finish. Really well balanced for a 20% ABV wine. Ended up tracking down a bottle online.
Stole the show at our dinner party
Brought this out after dinner with friends and everyone went quiet for a second after the first sip. The fig and chocolate notes are gorgeous and there's a salty thing going on that none of us could stop talking about. Absolutely worth it for a special occasion.
Great with a cheese board
Picked this up for a cheese and port night we were hosting. Paired it with stilton and some roasted almonds and honestly it was perfect — the almond in the port matched really well. Very rich and warming. A bit intense if you're used to lighter wines.
