First Impressions

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Sylvain Cathiard et Fils 2020 arrives at £750.00, and at this price point, expectations are rightly elevated. 75cl / 14.5% - Winemaker Sebastien Cathiard takes a hands-off approach to the grapes’ development, resulting in rich and complex wines with a light oak touch. Aromas of morello.

France's winemaking heritage needs no introduction, but the best producers continue to find new ways to express their terroir while honouring centuries of tradition. Sylvain Cathiard is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers inviting aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, underscored by hints of cedar and dried herbs. Moving to the palate, the wine is concentrated and structured, showing blackcurrant, plum, and a touch of dark chocolate with polished tannins. The finish is clean and lingering with red fruit, earthy notes, and a savoury sign-off.

Food Pairing and Serving

This pairs beautifully with roasted red meats, aged cheeses, and hearty stews. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 30 minutes to let the aromas fully develop.

The Verdict

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Sylvain Cathiard et Fils 2020 earns a well-deserved 9 out of 10. This is an exceptional red that delivers Pinot Noir with genuine conviction and craft. At £750.00, this sits in premium territory, and it delivers the quality to match. Herbert Muller VIPsAllowed - Dinner party showstopper

Opened this for a dinner party with friends who are proper into their wine and every single person commented on it. Really concentrated plum and blackcurrant flavours with a sort of earthy, savoury thing on the finish that kept us all going back for another sip. Paired it with slow-cooked lamb and it was magic.

Bought this for our anniversary and wow. The dark cherry and plum flavours are incredible — rich and deep but nothing feels heavy or over the top. Tannins are smooth as silk and the finish just goes on and on. At £750 it's not an everyday bottle obviously but for a special occasion it's absolutely perfect.

Samir Patel VIPsAllowed - Stunning but hard to justify the price
8/10

Had this at a restaurant in London and it was genuinely fantastic — the cherry and cedar notes are spot on and that finish is ridiculously long. But £750 a bottle? I dunno. It's brilliant wine but there are great Burgundies at half the price that get you 90% of the way there.

Treated myself after a promotion and just sat there grinning after the first sip. The plum and blackcurrant hit you first and then this clean, long finish kicks in that's sort of earthy and fruity at the same time. I don't know much about fancy wine but I know this is special. Would I buy it again? Probably not at £750 but I'm so happy I tried it once.

I've been slowly working my way through Burgundy's premier cru vineyards and Cathiard's Malconsorts is a highlight. Properly concentrated with great structure — the dark chocolate note is subtle but it's there and adds a lovely richness. Long savoury finish too. Needs a good decant though, gave it about two hours.

Derek Chang VIPsAllowed - Best Pinot Noir I've ever had
10/10

My wife got me this as a birthday present and I'm still thinking about it weeks later. The blackcurrant and dark chocolate thing going on is just beautiful. I've had a lot of Burgundy but this is genuinely on another level. If you can afford it, do it.

Emily Thomas VIPsAllowed - The wine shop guy was right
9/10

Got recommended this by the guy at my local wine merchant when I said I wanted something special for a milestone birthday. The dried herbs and cedar underneath all that cherry fruit is so good. At 14.5% it's got some power to it but it never feels boozy. Really glad I splashed out.

Nils Bergman VIPsAllowed - Amazing wine but I expected more
7/10

Look, this is a very good wine, no question. The fruit is lovely and the tannins are really well integrated. But at this price point I was expecting to have some kind of spiritual experience and honestly it didn't quite get there for me. Maybe I need to cellar it a few more years.
