Vincent Gaudry Sancerre Melodie de Vieilles Vignes 2022
Red 14% ABV ABV Vincent GaudryBirthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present from my partner who knows I love Sancerre. Wasn't expecting a red Sancerre but wow, it's got real depth to it — loads of fruit but not heavy at all. The acidity keeps everything fresh and I kept going back for another glass. At £43 it's not an everyday bottle but for a special occasion it's spot on.
Old vines doing their thing
Picked this up after reading about old vine wines and wanted to see what the fuss was about. You can tell there's concentration here without it being jammy or over the top. Really layered fruit and a finish that just keeps going. Goes brilliantly with a slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
Solid but not mind-blowing
Decent wine, don't get me wrong. The fruit is well-defined and it's clearly well made — nothing rough or off about it. I just expected a bit more personality for north of £40. It's clean and composed, almost a bit too polite? My wife loved it though so what do I know.
Wow, red Sancerre is a thing??
I only ever knew Sancerre as a white wine so this was a total surprise when I saw it on a restaurant menu. So glad I tried it. It's expressive and fruity right from the first sniff, and at 14% it's got some proper weight to it but still feels elegant. Tracked down a bottle online afterwards — not cheap but I'm hooked.
Nice but steep for a weeknight
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something interesting for a dinner party. It's good — clean, well-balanced, and the flavours really opened up after about 20 minutes in the glass. But £43 is a lot and I'm not sure my mates noticed the difference vs something half the price. Would maybe buy again for a smaller gathering where people are actually paying attention.
