Szepsy Szamorodni Tokaji 2017
Dessert 14% ABV ABV SzepsyThis changed my mind about sweet wines
I normally avoid dessert wines because they're too much for me, but a friend opened this after dinner and I was genuinely surprised. It's sweet but not in an obvious way — there's almost a savoury thing going on underneath that makes it really drinkable. Went back for three glasses which tells you everything. Now I need to find more Tokaji.
Nice but steep price
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something different for a dinner party. It's good — really honeyed and interesting, and everyone commented on how clean the finish was. But I'm not sure I'd pay nearly £64 again when there are solid dessert wines for half that. Would happily drink it if someone else was buying though.
Properly impressed
Had this at a restaurant and liked it so much I tracked down a bottle. It's got this lovely apricot and honey nose but what I really rate is how refreshing it is — you don't get that heavy sticky feeling some dessert wines give you. The acidity keeps everything balanced. Poured some with a cheese board and it was spot on.
Birthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present for myself because I've been wanting to try a proper Tokaji for ages. The dried apricot thing is real — you can actually smell it straight away. What surprised me is how not-sweet it feels despite being a dessert wine, like there's this sharp acidity that stops it being sickly. At 64 quid it's not cheap but honestly felt worth it for a special occasion.
Solid dessert wine, not mind-blowing
Picked this up after reading about Hungarian wines online. It's well made for sure — nice honey and apricot flavours, good acidity so it doesn't feel cloying. Finish is clean which I appreciated. My only gripe is at 14% and £64 I was expecting something a bit more complex. Decent but I've had Sauternes at similar prices that wowed me more.
