Soalheiro Alvarinho 2024
Red 14% ABV ABV SoalheiroNot sure what the fuss is about
Saw this on a wine list and thought I'd try it. It's fine, nothing wrong with it, but at this price point I expected a bit more. The fruit is there but it didn't really wow me. Maybe I need to try it again with the right meal.
Dinner party hit
Bought two bottles for a dinner party and everyone asked about it. It's got depth to it without being one of those wines that tries too hard. Clean finish too, no weird aftertaste. Would grab it again if I spotted it for under £20.
Proper Portuguese gem
Been getting into Portuguese wines lately and this Soalheiro is a cracker. You can really taste the terroir — there's a mineral edge underneath all that ripe fruit. Complex enough to sit and think about but easy enough to just enjoy. 14% sneaks up on you though!
Good not great
Bit pricey for what it is honestly. It's pleasant and the fruit is nice but I've had Portuguese wines at half the price that I enjoyed just as much. Would probably try something else next time.
Solid weekend wine
Nice enough wine, quite full-bodied but not heavy if that makes sense. I liked the minerally quality to it. At £22 it's fine for a Friday treat but probably wouldn't buy it every week.
Really impressed with this one
Picked this up after the guy at my local wine shop recommended it. Lovely stone fruit on the nose and it's got this bright acidity that keeps it fresh despite being 14%. Went through the bottle way too fast with some roast chicken.
Birthday bottle that delivered
My partner got me this for my birthday and I absolutely loved it. Really expressive nose, loads of ripe fruit, and it just kept getting better as it opened up. The finish lingers in a really nice way. Would definitely buy again.
Great with food
Had this with a lamb tagine and it was a really good match. The acidity cuts through richer dishes perfectly. On its own it's nice but I think it really shines with food.
