Sharpham Dart Valley Reserve 2023: Citrus-Driven Elegance
White 10.5% ABV ABV SharphamBirthday present surprise
Got this as a birthday gift from someone who knows I like trying different wines. Wasn't sure what to expect from a Devon white but it's genuinely good. Very citrusy and crisp with a slightly salty finish that's quite unusual. Light enough to drink on its own without food too.
Solid English white
Bought a couple of bottles for a dinner party and everyone commented on how fresh and zingy it was. The lime and passionfruit flavours are really nice. Not the most complex wine I've ever had but very easy drinking and a good conversation starter being English.
Perfect for warm evenings
Saw this on a restaurant menu in Totnes and ordered it on a whim. So glad I did. It's bright and zesty without being aggressive — the grapefruit and lime are there but there's a floral softness too. Tracked down a bottle to take home afterwards. Goes brilliantly with salads and light pasta.
One of the best English wines I've tried
I've been slowly working my way through English whites this year and this is up there with the best. Beautiful citrus nose, really lively on the palate with that passionfruit and lime combo, and the finish just goes on and on. The low ABV is a bonus too — had two glasses and still felt sharp. Worth every penny.
A bit too tart for me
My partner loved this but I found it quite sharp. Lots of citrus and not much sweetness to balance it out. It's well made, I can tell that, just not really my style. Would probably suit people who like Sauvignon Blanc more than I do.
Nice but not cheap
Good white wine, very zesty and clean tasting. I got the gooseberry thing they mention on the label and there's a sort of salty edge I wasn't expecting. £21.75 feels a bit steep for an English white at 10.5% though — I'd want it closer to £16-17 to buy regularly.
Great with fish and chips!
The guy in our local wine shop recommended this and said to try it with seafood. Had it with fish and chips on Friday night and honestly it was perfect — there's this briny, salty thing on the finish that just works. Never heard of Madeleine Angevine before but I'm a fan now.
Lovely summer sipper
Picked this up at Sharpham when we visited Devon last month and really glad I did. Super refreshing — loads of lime and passionfruit, almost like a fancy lemonade but obviously wine. Really crisp finish too. Will definitely be buying more for the garden this summer.
