Romate Old & Plus Pedro Ximenez Sherry / 20 Year Old
Fortified 20% ABV ABV RomateChristmas present that blew me away
My wife got me this for Christmas and wow. The dried fruit flavours are incredible — like the best fig roll you've ever had but in a glass. It's sweet but not sickly, which I was worried about with a PX sherry. At £80 it's not cheap but honestly felt worth every penny for a special occasion bottle.
Picked this up in Spain
Found a bottle of this at a wine shop in Jerez while on holiday and brought it home in my suitcase. So glad I did. It's beautifully balanced for something so sweet — you can tell the 20 years in solera have done their thing. The fig paste and dark fruit notes are spot on. Rationing myself to small glasses because I don't want it to run out.
Perfect after-dinner wine
Poured this after a Sunday roast instead of dessert and everyone went quiet for a second. It's rich and sweet but there's an acidity that stops it being too much. We had it with some stilton and it was absolutely perfect. The kind of bottle where you keep going back for just one more small glass.
Really lovely but pricey
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something special for a dinner party. It's gorgeous — all dark fruit and figs, and it lingers forever after each sip. My only gripe is the price tag. Over £80 is a lot, even for a 20 year old sherry. I'd buy it again for a big occasion though.
Good but I expected more at this price
It's a nice sherry, don't get me wrong. Lots of dried fruit flavour, long finish, well made. But at £80+ I was expecting to have my mind blown and it didn't quite get there for me. I've had PX sherries at half the price that I enjoyed almost as much. Might just be a personal taste thing.
Best sherry I've ever had
Tried this at a restaurant and immediately ordered a bottle online. Twenty years of ageing really shows — it's so smooth and complex, keeps changing as you sip it. The finish just goes on and on. If you like sweet wines at all, you need to try this.
