Simon Hughes VIPsAllowed - Best Pommard I've had in ages
10/10

Had this at a friend's dinner party and immediately asked where they got it. The finish is so clean and balanced, none of that overpowering boozy thing you sometimes get with bigger reds. Went brilliantly with the lamb we were having. Already ordered two bottles for myself.

Nice wine, don't get me wrong. Dark fruit, earthy, well-made. But £85 is a lot and I've had Burgundies at half the price that I've enjoyed just as much on a Tuesday night with pasta. If someone else is buying or it's Christmas, sure. Otherwise I'd probably look for something a bit easier on the wallet.

Sara Lindstrom VIPsAllowed - Solid Burgundy but needs time
8/10

Picked this up after the guy at my local wine shop recommended it. First glass I thought it was a bit tight and closed off, but after about 30 minutes it really started showing what it could do — layers of dark fruit and proper depth. 14% alcohol but you honestly wouldn't know it. Would probably give it a 9 if I'd decanted it properly from the start.

Bought this for my husband's 50th and we were both blown away. Really dark fruity flavours with an earthy thing going on that made it feel properly grown-up. The tannins are serious but not harsh, and it opened up beautifully over dinner. At £85 it's not an everyday bottle but for a special occasion it's absolutely worth it.
