Astrid Nilsen VIPsAllowed - Stunning birthday fizz

My wife got me this for my 40th and wow, what a bottle. Bone dry with this amazing chalky, almost flinty thing going on that I've never really noticed in champagne before. At £53 it's not cheap but honestly it felt like a proper treat — we finished it before the cake was even cut.

I've been getting more into grower champagnes lately and this Pierre Legras is fantastic. No dosage so it's properly dry — you get all that toasted almond and orchard fruit without any sweetness getting in the way. The acidity is razor sharp but in a good way. Grand cru quality and honestly not bad value compared to the big houses.

Emily Thomas VIPsAllowed - Nice but maybe not £53 nice

Picked this up after the guy in the wine shop talked it up as something special. It's good, don't get me wrong — really crisp and clean with a lovely citrus thing happening. But for what you're paying I expected it to blow my mind a bit more. I'd probably reach for a £30 blanc de blancs most nights instead.

Had this with oysters at a dinner party and it was absolutely spot on. Really dry and mineral-y with a sort of salty edge that just worked brilliantly with the food. The finish goes on forever too. Would definitely buy again for a nice meal.

First glass I wasn't sure about this — it's quite restrained compared to what I normally drink and I think I was expecting more upfront fizzy champagne vibes. But by the second glass the almond and citrus flavours really started coming through and I got it. Might be one for people who already know what they like rather than a crowd-pleaser at a party.
