First Impressions

Paul Clouet Selection Grand Reserve NV Champagne arrives at £40.25, and at this price, it needs to offer genuine quality to stand out in a crowded market. 75cl / 12.5% - Based in Bouzy this house is part of the Bonnaire family, so it is no surprise that the wines are of similar quality. This wine has a very pretty lemon sponge cake.

France's winemaking heritage needs no introduction, but the best producers continue to find new ways to express their terroir while honouring centuries of tradition. Paul Clouet is a name worth knowing in this context.

On the Nose and Palate

The nose offers fine and persistent mousse releasing aromas of brioche, toasted almond, and citrus blossom. Moving to the palate, the wine is precise and focused, with lemon curd, green apple, and a chalky texture that drives the palate. The finish is extended finish of toasted hazelnut, green apple, and a fine saline note.

Food Pairing and Serving

Equally at home as an aperitif or alongside seafood, sushi, or delicate canapés. Serve at 8-10°C in proper flutes or, better yet, white wine glasses to appreciate the full bouquet.

The Verdict

Paul Clouet Selection Grand Reserve NV Champagne earns a well-deserved 9 out of 10. This is an exceptional champagne that delivers Chardonnay with genuine conviction and craft. At £40.25, this represents excellent value for money. Whether you are building a cellar or simply looking for something excellent to drink tonight, this bottle earns its place.

I don't know much about champagne but I know what I like and this is incredible. So smooth and creamy with this nutty thing going on at the end that just stays with you. Bought a second bottle the next day, no regrets.

The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something nicer than Moët for our anniversary. It's good — proper toasty almond smell and a crisp apple flavour that I really liked. Just not sure it's £40 good when you can get decent champagne for less.

Had this at a dinner party with oysters and smoked salmon and it was a perfect match. There's a chalky, almost salty quality to it that works brilliantly with food. The blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir really comes through. Would buy again but probably keeping it for special dinners rather than a Tuesday night.

Got this for my 40th and honestly it was the highlight of the night. Really biscuity and toasty with a lovely lemony zing that kept me going back for more. At £40 it's not cheap but for a special occasion it's absolutely worth it.
