Niepoort Colheita 2008 Port: Complex and Rewarding
Fortified 20% ABV ABV NiepoortGreat with a cheese board
Picked this up for a dinner party and paired it with stilton and walnuts — worked brilliantly. The salty edge it has really cuts through rich cheese. My mate who knows nothing about wine kept going back for more so that says something.
This is what port should taste like
Saw this on a restaurant menu and ordered a glass on a whim. Absolutely loved it. That dark chocolate and caramel combo with no harsh alcohol burn is exactly what I want from a port. Went and tracked down a bottle the next week.
Really nice after-dinner sipper
Bought this for my dad's 60th and we cracked it open after the meal. The walnut and chocolate thing is real — it's like dessert in a glass. Bit steep at over fifty quid but for a special occasion it felt worth it.
Good but not £50 good
The wine shop guy talked me into this and honestly I expected more for the price. It's perfectly fine, nice caramel and fig flavours, but I've had cheaper tawny ports that I enjoyed just as much. Wouldn't buy again.
Nice Christmas treat
Got this as a Christmas present from my sister. I'm not usually a port person but the dried fig and warming spice thing won me over on a cold evening. Lasted about three nights. Not sure I'd pay full price myself though.
Solid port, nothing mind-blowing
Decent fortified wine. You get the dried fruit and nutty stuff on the nose which is nice. It's smooth and doesn't burn which I appreciate at 20%. Would happily drink it again but probably wouldn't seek it out specifically.
Expected more honestly
I like Niepoort's stuff generally but this didn't grab me. The orange peel and spice notes are there but it felt a bit one-dimensional after the first couple of glasses. Maybe I just prefer their younger ports. Fine but not exciting.
Touriga Nacional does the heavy lifting
I've been getting into Portuguese wines lately and this is a proper colheita. The concentration is impressive and that saline quality keeps it from being too sweet which is my usual complaint with port. Good value for a single-harvest bottling if you ask me.
