Niepoort Bioma Vinha Velha 2013 Port
Fortified 20% ABV ABV NiepoortBest port I've ever had, full stop
My local wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something really special. I'm not exaggerating when I say every sip was slightly different — like layers kept revealing themselves. You'd never guess it's 20% because the alcohol is completely hidden. I've been into port for about five years now and this is the one that's ruined all others for me.
Really good but maybe overhyped?
Saw this getting loads of praise online so treated myself for Christmas. It's definitely a quality port — nice structure, good acidity, long finish. But at £164 I expected it to change my life and it didn't quite get there. I'd probably pick a Niepoort at a lower price point next time and be just as happy.
Incredible but hard to justify the price
Tried this at a tasting event and it genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Really expressive nose, loads of dark concentrated fruit, and the finish just goes on and on. But £164 is a lot for port when you can get very good stuff for a third of that. If someone else is buying, absolutely — but I'd hesitate to grab it myself again.
Old vine magic
Had this at a friend's dinner party and spent half the evening talking about it. It's got this depth to it that I think comes from the old vines — proper complexity without being a big boozy monster. Clean finish too. I'm now saving up to buy my own bottle which says it all really.
Worth every penny for a special night
Bought this for my wife's 40th and we split it after the kids went to bed. The fruit is so concentrated but it doesn't feel heavy at all — there's this acidity running through it that keeps you reaching for another sip. At £164 it's not an everyday thing but for a milestone birthday? Absolutely worth it.
