Niepoort 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Fortified 20% ABV ABV NiepoortChristmas day winner
Bought this for Christmas dinner and it was the star of the whole meal. The dried fruit and caramel flavours are incredible — so rich and warming. Everyone was fighting over the last glass. Worth every penny of the £77.
Solid tawny, wish it was cheaper
Saw this on a menu and splashed out on a glass. Lots of candied orange and toasted almond, really warming and smooth. I'd love to keep a bottle at home for cold evenings but the price means it's a treat rather than a regular buy. Stilton and a glass of this though — chef's kiss.
Good not great
I'm fairly new to port so maybe I'm missing something, but for £77 I expected to be more blown away. It's nice — warming, nutty, decent finish — but I think I'd rather spend that money on two bottles of something else. Could just be that 20 year tawny isn't my thing.
Niepoort know what they're doing
Picked this up on a trip to Porto last year. The dried fruit and spice are beautifully balanced and it's got a clean finish that doesn't outstay its welcome. At 20% it's strong but you'd never know — dangerously drinkable.
Perfect after-dinner drink
Had this with a cheese board after a dinner party and it was spot on. Really rich with fig and caramel flavours but not heavy or syrupy like some ports can be. The acidity keeps it fresh which I wasn't expecting.
Blew my mind
The guy at my local wine shop recommended this and I'm so glad he did. Twenty years in the barrel and you can taste every one of them. The finish just goes on and on — dried apricot and warm spice that hangs around in the best way. Special stuff.
Proper grown-up port
My wife got me this for my birthday and it's a real step up from the usual supermarket tawny. You can really taste the walnut and fig — it's complex but easy to drink. Would definitely buy again, though maybe not every month at this price.
Nice but steep
Tried this at a restaurant and liked it enough to track down a bottle. It's smooth and the orange peel and almond notes are lovely, but £77 is a lot for port. I've had bottles at half the price that I enjoyed almost as much.
