Mullineux Signature Granite Swartland Syrah 2018: Old World Finesse
Red 13.5% ABV ABV MullineuxReally lovely but pricey
The wine itself is gorgeous — plummy, smooth, bit of leather and spice on the finish. But nearly £80 is a lot and I've had South African Syrahs at half the price that come close. Would I buy it again? Maybe for a special dinner.
South Africa does it again
I've been getting into Swartland wines lately and this Mullineux Syrah is the real deal. Only 13.5% ABV but it tastes so full and rich. The dried herb and garrigue character reminds me of a good Rhône but with its own identity. Absolutely loved it.
Smooth operator
The guy at my local wine shop recommended this and he wasn't wrong. Super velvety, loads of blackberry and cassis flavour. I'm not great at describing wine but this one just feels expensive if that makes sense. Went down very easily with a steak.
Best Syrah I've had in years
Picked this up after reading about Mullineux and I'm so glad I did. There's this amazing savoury, herby thing going on alongside the dark fruit that just keeps you coming back for more. The finish goes on forever. Already ordered another bottle.
Worth every penny
Saw this on a wine list while on holiday and ordered it on a whim. Three of us shared it and nobody said a word for the first sip — just silence and nodding. That plum and leather finish is still stuck in my head weeks later. Genuinely special bottle.
Stole the show at our dinner party
Opened this with a slow-cooked lamb shoulder and it was perfect. Everyone kept asking about it. Really elegant for a Syrah — none of that jammy heaviness you sometimes get. The vanilla and spice notes work so well with red meat.
Birthday treat that delivered
My wife got me this for my 40th and wow. The blackberry and dark fruit flavours are incredible, and it's so smooth you barely notice the tannins. At £80 it's not an everyday wine but for a special occasion it's hard to beat.
Good but didn't blow me away
Had this at a restaurant and it was nice enough — dark fruity, smooth finish with some spice. But for what it costs I expected to be more wowed. I think I just prefer bolder, punchier Syrahs. That said the quality is obviously there.
