Meursault 1er Cru 'Poruzots' Thierry Pillot 2020: Crisp and Compelling
White 13.5% ABV ABV Thierry PillotThe finish is something else
Wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something special for a dinner party. The smoky note at the end caught me off guard in the best way. Friends who know way more about wine than me were impressed, so that's a win.
Nice but not £175 nice
Got this as a birthday present and it's a solid Burgundy Chardonnay. Smooth, bit of nuttiness, decent acidity. But honestly I've had white Burgundies at half the price that I enjoyed just as much. Wouldn't buy it for myself.
Lovely but needs food
Tried this on its own first and thought it was a bit much — very creamy and almondy. Then had it with a chicken dish and it completely came alive. The acidity really cuts through richer food. Not an everyday wine obviously but I'd get it again for a special meal.
Best white I've had this year
Picked this up after tasting it at a wine fair and I'm so glad I did. Beautiful golden apple and hazelnut on the nose, then this gorgeous pear and cream thing going on. The balance at 13.5% is spot on — never feels boozy. Yes it's expensive but premier cru Meursault isn't cheap anywhere.
Good with seafood
Had this at a restaurant with grilled lobster and it worked really well. The creamy texture paired nicely and there's a freshness that stops it being too rich. Would I pay £175 retail though? Probably not.
Really elegant white
Bought this for our anniversary dinner and it was lovely. Creamy and rich but not heavy — the pear and almond thing is real, you can actually taste it. At £175 it's a splurge but felt worth it for the occasion.
Overhyped Burgundy
Maybe I'm missing something but this didn't blow me away for £175. It's a nice Chardonnay — some florals, bit nutty, smooth finish. But I keep thinking about that price tag and I just can't justify it. My mate brought over a £40 Mâcon last week that I honestly enjoyed more.
Expected more honestly
I like Meursault generally and this is fine — nice floral nose, apple and pear flavours, all pleasant enough. But for a premier cru at this price point I wanted to be wowed and I just wasn't. Perfectly drinkable, just not exciting.
