Le Marquis de Calon Segur 2021: Velvety Depth and Poise
Red 13% ABV ABV Calon SegurPunching well above its weight
I'm no expert but I know what I like, and this is gorgeous. Smells like summer berries and herbs, tastes like serious red wine without being one of those ones that dries your whole mouth out. Brought it to a friend's BBQ and everyone asked what it was.
Bit pricey for a second wine
It's good, genuinely good — the finish goes on forever and there's a nice smoky quality to it. But it IS the second wine of Calon Ségur and £47.50 feels steep for that. The strawberry and redcurrant on the nose is lovely though. I'd grab it on offer for sure.
Solid Bordeaux for the price
Picked this up after the guy at my local wine shop recommended it. Loads of blackcurrant and a cedar-y warmth that lingers. At £47.50 it's not cheap but it's genuine Saint-Estèphe quality without the crazy first wine price. Would happily buy again.
Perfect with a slow-cooked lamb
Made a lamb shoulder last Sunday and opened this alongside it. The tobacco and blackcurrant flavours were brilliant with the meat. Not too heavy either at 13% so we got through the bottle without feeling wiped out. Really well balanced stuff.
Birthday treat that delivered
Bought this for my 40th and it was absolutely worth it. Really smooth with this lovely smoky thing going on and dark fruit that just keeps going. My wife said it smelled like roses which I thought was mad but she's right. One of the best reds I've had this year.
Nice but expected more
Had this at a dinner party and it was good, don't get me wrong — lovely dark fruit and a smooth finish. But for nearly fifty quid I was expecting to be blown away and I wasn't quite. Might be one that needs a few years in the cellar to really shine.
