La Gitana Amontillado Napoleon VORS / Hidalgo: A Sip of History
Fortified 21% ABV ABV HidalgoImpressive stuff
Picked this up after reading about VORS sherries and wanting to try one. The balance is spot on — it's rich and full but never feels heavy or too sweet. That long spicy finish is the real highlight for me.
Lovely but wish I'd tried before buying
Saw this on a menu at a wine bar and liked it enough to order a bottle online. It's really good — nutty and rich with a nice salty edge. Only gripe is I slightly prefer a drier style of amontillado, this one leans a bit more towards the sweet/rich side for my taste.
Best sherry I've ever had
Had this at a tapas restaurant and immediately tracked down a bottle. There's this salty, almost coastal thing going on underneath all the dark fruit and nut flavours that makes it completely addictive. Absolutely phenomenal with some hard cheese and almonds.
Proper grown-up drink
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something special for after dinner. It's rich and warming with loads of butterscotch and toasted nut flavours. At 21% you don't need much, so the bottle actually lasts a while which helps justify the price.
Blown away by this
Bought this for my dad's 60th and we ended up sharing the whole bottle. The caramel and dried apricot on the finish just goes on and on. Honestly didn't know sherry could be this good — definitely converting me from my usual port habit.
Goes down dangerously easy for 21%
You honestly cannot tell this is 21% ABV. The alcohol is so well hidden behind all the butterscotch and caramel. Had it with some dark chocolate after dinner and it was perfect. Be careful though, it sneaks up on you!
Not really my thing
My partner loves sherry so I got this for our anniversary. It's clearly well made and she was very happy with it, but the whole prune and molasses thing is a bit much for me personally. I can appreciate the quality even if it's not my style.
Great but steep
Really nice sherry, proper complex with the prune and almond stuff going on. But £81 is a lot for sherry, even one this old. I'd buy it again for a special occasion but not as an everyday thing.
