Kopke 1996 Colheita Port: Aged to Perfection
Fortified 20% ABV ABV KopkeThis stuff is dangerous
Opened this after a dinner party and nobody wanted to leave. It's so smooth and rich with all this fig and dried fruit going on, but there's a brightness to it that stops it being sickly. At 20% ABV it creeps up on you fast. Absolutely loved it.
Birthday treat that delivered
Got this as a 30th birthday present to myself because hey, treat yourself. The caramel and fig thing going on is incredible — it's like the fanciest dessert you've ever had but in a glass. Definitely one to sip slow after dinner. Worth every penny of the £86.
Perfect with cheese
Poured this alongside a stilton after Sunday roast and honestly it was magic. The sweetness from the fig and caramel balances the salty cheese perfectly. My wife who doesn't even like port had two glasses. It's got a clean dry edge at the end that stops it being too sweet.
Great colheita if you can stretch the budget
I've been getting into port lately and this is a step up from the tawnies I usually drink. You can really taste the age — all that walnut and caramel complexity. The dry finish is what makes it for me, keeps you coming back for another sip. Bit pricey but it's a 1996 vintage so fair enough.
Solid but I expected more
Saw this on a restaurant menu and thought why not. It's rich and warming with nice spice on the finish, and the orange peel thing is a cool touch. But for what I paid I was hoping to be completely blown away and it was more like quietly impressed. Good, not life-changing.
Proper after-dinner stuff
Bought a bottle for Christmas dinner and it went down a storm. Really rich dried fruit and walnut flavours but it doesn't feel heavy which surprised me. The finish just keeps going and going. Would buy again but probably only for special occasions at this price.
Nice but steep for a port
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something special for my dad's retirement. It's good — lovely caramel and orange peel notes — but £86 is a lot for port when you can get solid ones for half that. Dad enjoyed it though so can't complain too much.
