Hoffmann & Rathbone Classic Cuvee 2015
Red 14% ABV ABV Hoffmann & RathboneBirthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present from my partner and wow, really glad she picked it. Took a while to open up but once it did the fruit was gorgeous and clear. Tannins are there but smooth, not that dry mouth thing I hate. Will definitely be buying another bottle.
Dinner party winner
Opened this for a dinner party with lamb and it was a hit. Everyone commented on it. Really well structured, the kind of red where you keep going back for another sip without thinking about it. Let it breathe for a bit first though, it needs the air.
Bit pricey for what it is
Decent red, don't get me wrong — well made, balanced, pleasant enough finish. But for north of fifty quid I wanted something that really blew me away and it didn't quite get there. I've had wines at £30 that excited me more. Still nice with a steak though.
Genuinely impressed
Saw this on a restaurant menu and ordered a glass first to try it. Ended up buying a bottle to take home. The fruit is really expressive and clean, not buried under oak like a lot of reds at this level. The 14% ABV sneaks up on you because everything's so well integrated.
Great with a roast
Picked this up for Sunday roast and it was spot on. Needed about twenty minutes after opening before it really came alive but then the flavours were lovely. Good structure without being heavy. My wife who usually sticks to white even had a second glass.
Nice but steep for a weeknight
The wine shop guy recommended this and it's good, properly good, but £53.50 is a lot for me. Liked the balance and it went down easy despite being 14%. Would save it for a special occasion rather than a Tuesday night pasta.
Solid English red
Hoffmann & Rathbone don't mess about. Clean fruit, good acidity, tannins that aren't aggressive. The finish just kind of lingers nicely and makes you want more. At this price I expected quality and that's what I got.
