Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Fortified 20% ABV ABV FonsecaSolid tawny, maybe overhyped
Had this on a menu at a restaurant and decided to grab a bottle. It's good — smooth, warming, nice orange peel and dried apricot notes. But for £46 I expected to be blown away and I was more like pleasantly satisfied. Would still recommend it if you're into tawny port though.
Perfect after dinner sipper
The guy at the wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted something for after dinner with cheese. He was spot on. Really rich dried fruit and almond flavours, and it goes amazingly with stilton. Dangerous how easy it goes down at 20%.
Nice but not cheap
Got this as a birthday present and it's a lovely port, proper nutty and warming with a butterscotch sweetness. Bit pricey for what it is though — I've had decent tawnies for £15 less. Would I buy it myself? Probably not regularly.
Christmas day winner
Bought this for Christmas dinner and it absolutely stole the show. That caramel and fig thing going on is gorgeous, and it's so smooth for 20% — you'd never guess it was that strong. Worth every penny of the £46.
Converted me to port
Never really got port until I tried this at a friend's house. It's nothing like those cheap ruby ports — way more complex with the cinnamon spice and toasted walnut stuff going on. Immediately went and bought my own bottle. The finish just lingers in the best way.
