Emilio Hidalgo Villapanes Oloroso
Red 14% ABV ABV Emilio HidalgoThe wine shop guy was right
Bloke in my local recommended this when I said I wanted something different for a dinner party. It's got this beautiful balance to it — proper depth without being heavy. Went down a storm with the cheese board at the end of the night.
Decent, needs food though
Tried this on its own first and it was fine but nothing amazing. Then had it with some roast lamb and it properly came alive. The acidity cuts right through rich food. At this price I'd want it to wow me without needing dinner alongside it though.
Converted me to Oloroso
I always thought sherry was just for grandmas at Christmas but this completely changed my mind. So much going on — rich and layered but still really clean tasting. Already ordered another bottle.
Proper grown-up sherry
Bought this for my dad's 60th and we ended up finishing the bottle between three of us. Really layered and interesting — you keep finding new things in it the longer it sits in your glass. Not cheap but felt like a treat.
Holiday find that followed me home
Spotted this on a menu in Jerez last summer and tracked down a bottle back in the UK. Really expressive nose — you can smell it as soon as you pour. Everything just works together, nothing sticks out or feels off. Solid Oloroso that I'll keep coming back to.
Nice but steep price
Had this at a friend's place and thought it was lovely, then looked up the price and nearly fell over. Over sixty quid is a lot for sherry in my book. That said, it's genuinely complex and the finish goes on and on. Would buy it on offer.
