Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 2021 / Half Bottle
White 12% ABV ABV Egon MullerFinally tried the Egon Muller hype
A friend who's really into German Riesling has been banging on about Scharzhofberger for years so I finally splashed out on the 2021 Auslese. I get it now. The clarity of the aromas is just unreal, like nothing is fighting for attention, everything just makes sense. Longest finish I've ever experienced on a white wine. This is the real deal.
So this is what great Riesling tastes like
I'm more of a red wine person usually but my partner ordered this at a tasting dinner and it completely changed how I think about white wine. Super precise, nothing out of place, and it just keeps going on the finish. I had no idea a sweet wine could feel this elegant and structured. Completely converted me.
Worth every penny for a special occasion
Bought the half bottle for my wife's 40th birthday dinner and wow. The sweetness is there but it's not cloying at all — really clean and balanced. You can taste layer after layer if you slow down with it. At £430 for a half bottle it's obviously insane money but honestly it felt like a proper once-in-a-lifetime wine.
Stunning but hard to justify the price
Had a glass of this at a restaurant and it was genuinely beautiful — perfectly balanced between sweet and acid, really concentrated but not heavy at all. But when I looked up what a half bottle costs retail I nearly choked. £430 is a LOT. The wine is a 10 but my wallet says 7.
