Egon Muller Scharzhofberg Spatlese Riesling 2020
White 12% ABV ABV Egon MullerTook a while to open up but rewarded patience
Poured a glass and thought it was nice but nothing crazy. Left it for 20 minutes and came back to a completely different wine — way more complex with loads more going on in the nose. The finish lingers really nicely too. I'm still learning about German wines but this one's definitely taught me to slow down and give them time.
The wine shop guy was right
Went in looking for a nice white for my wife's birthday and the guy behind the counter talked me into this Egon Muller. Glad he did. She loved it. It's got this amazing thing where the sweetness and the sharpness just balance each other out perfectly. We drank it slightly chilled with some cheese and it was brilliant.
Worth every penny for a special night
Bought this for our anniversary dinner and wow. The balance between the sweetness and acidity is just perfect — it's not cloying at all, which I was worried about with a Spätlese. Paired it with some pan-seared scallops and we were both just sat there grinning. At £215 it's not an everyday bottle but for a big occasion, absolutely.
Beautiful but hard to justify the price
Had this at a restaurant and it was genuinely lovely — really clean, precise, with that classic Riesling acidity keeping everything fresh. But £215 a bottle is steep. I've had German Rieslings at a third of the price that got me 80% of the way there. It's special, just not sure it's THAT special.
Best Riesling I've ever had
My brother-in-law brought this to Christmas and I'm still thinking about it months later. So much going on in the glass — every sip you notice something different. The finish just goes on and on. I don't usually spend this much on wine but I've already ordered one for myself.
