Domaine Violot-Guillemard Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets 2019
Red 14% ABV ABV Violot-GuillemardThis one surprised me
Opened this for a dinner party not knowing what to expect and everyone was asking about it. Really generous fruit character without being jammy, and the acidity keeps everything in check. Went back and bought two more bottles the next week.
Solid Pommard
Picked this up after the guy at my local wine shop recommended it. Proper Burgundy — well structured with good depth but not heavy or overpowering despite being 14%. Had it with a slow-cooked beef stew and it was a great match.
Birthday treat that delivered
Got this as a birthday present to myself and honestly no regrets. Really expressive on the nose, loads of ripe fruit, and it just keeps giving. The finish lingers in a really satisfying way. At £70 it's not an everyday wine but for a special occasion it's spot on.
Bit pricey for what it is
Had this at a restaurant and thought it was nice enough — smooth, well balanced, pleasant finish. But when I looked up the retail price afterwards I was a bit surprised. It's a good wine, not a great one. You're paying for the Pommard name a bit here I think.
Keeps pulling you back
What I like about this is it doesn't hit you over the head — the complexity sort of builds as you drink it. No oaky heaviness, just clean ripe fruit. Sat really nicely with a lamb roast. Would happily drink again.
Good but not blown away
Decent wine, nicely balanced and clean on the finish. I just expected a bit more complexity for nearly seventy quid. It's well made and the fruit is honest and upfront, but at this price point I've had Premier Crus that grabbed me more.
