Dirupi Gess Grumello Valtellina Superiore 2018
Red 14% ABV ABV DirupiInteresting but needs time
Opened this on a Tuesday night and honestly think I should have saved it for a proper occasion and maybe decanted it longer. The tannins were quite firm and it took ages to open up. When it did there was real complexity there but I reckon another year or two in the bottle would help.
Stunning with a lamb shank
Had this with slow-cooked lamb and it was perfect. Really focused aromas, nothing over the top, and the acidity cut through the richness of the meat brilliantly. 14% ABV but doesn't feel heavy at all. Genuinely elegant wine.
Birthday treat that delivered
My partner got me this for my birthday after the guy in the wine shop recommended it. Took a couple of sips to really get into it but then the layers just kept coming. Loved how clean and long the finish was. Would buy again but not every week at that price!
Dinner party winner
Brought this to a dinner party and everyone asked about it. Really distinctive nose — clear and expressive without being showy. The finish just goes on and on. My mate who knows way more about wine than me said it was excellent so I'll take that as validation for the £64 I spent.
Proper Italian red
Picked this up from a specialist Italian wine shop and wow. Really elegant stuff — lean and structured with loads of complexity that keeps revealing itself. At £64 it's not cheap but honestly felt worth it for a special Friday night in.
Valtellina is so underrated
If you like Barolo but want something a bit different, try wines from Valtellina. This Grumello is fantastic — all that mountain freshness with serious structure underneath. Dirupi are doing amazing things up there. Bought two more bottles after finishing this one.
Good but steep
Nice wine, well made, but £64.50 is a lot and I'm not sure it blew me away enough to justify it. The structure is impressive and it's clearly quality, but I've had Nebbiolo from Langhe at half the price that I enjoyed just as much. One for a special occasion maybe.
