Croft Quinta Da Roeda Port 2005
Fortified 20% ABV ABV CroftOne of my favourite ports this year
Saw this on a restaurant menu and ordered a glass on a whim — ended up tracking down a bottle the next week. The nose is gorgeous, really clear and focused, and that finish just hangs around making you want to take your time. Absolutely loved it. Already bought a second bottle to put away for next winter.
Really impressed with this one
Bought this for my dad's retirement dinner and it went down a treat. Really smooth for 20% — you honestly wouldn't guess it's that strong. The finish just lingers in the best way. At £28.50 I'd say it's solid value for a vintage port.
Punches above its weight
I've been getting into port lately and this Croft is one of the better ones I've tried under £30. There's a real depth to it that keeps changing as you drink — started fruity, then got more complex and interesting. The acidity keeps it fresh which I wasn't expecting from something this strong.
Decent birthday treat
Got this as a birthday present for myself. It's well balanced and the alcohol doesn't hit you over the head despite being 20%. Enjoyed it over a couple of evenings with some dark chocolate. Not life-changing but definitely a nice bottle to have around.
Nice but not blown away
Had this at a friend's house after dinner. It's fine, well made and all that, but I expected more from a 2005 vintage port at this price. The fruit flavours are there but it didn't wow me the way some cheaper tawnies have. Would drink it again but wouldn't rush out to buy a bottle.
Great with cheese
The guy at my local wine shop recommended this when I said I wanted a port for a cheese board. He was spot on — it's got enough going on to stand up to stilton without being too heavy. Clean finish too, no syrupy aftertaste. Will be picking up another for Christmas.
