Castello di Potentino Sangiovese Sacromonte 2016: Dark Fruit Elegance
Red 14% ABV ABV Castello di PotentinoSolid Italian red
Nice Sangiovese, proper and full-bodied without being too heavy. I got a lot of blackcurrant and something almost chocolatey on the nose which was a pleasant surprise. Tannins are there but they don't dry your mouth out. Good dinner party wine.
One of my favourite finds this year
Saw this on a restaurant menu and loved it so much I tracked down a bottle to buy. The dark chocolate and vanilla on the nose drew me in and the palate just keeps giving — black fruit, smoke, savoury depth. Genuinely one of the best sub-£20 reds I've had in ages. Already ordered more.
Really impressed with this one
Picked this up from a local wine shop on the guy's recommendation and glad I did. Loads of dark fruit — plum and blackberry especially — and it's got this smoky thing going on that I really liked. Had it with a slow-cooked beef ragu and it was perfect. Would definitely buy again at £19.50.
Birthday treat that delivered
My wife got me this for my birthday and we opened it with a big steak dinner. Absolutely loved it. Rich and bold with this lovely long finish — sort of tobacco and cedar that just hangs around. At 14% it's got some punch to it so pace yourself!
Good but not amazing for the price
It's a decent red, don't get me wrong — dark fruity, smooth finish, all that. But at nearly £20 I feel like I've had similar Sangioveses for less. The smoky oak flavour was nice though. Might grab it on offer but probably wouldn't pay full whack again.
Went down well with friends
Brought two bottles to a dinner party and everyone enjoyed it. It's quite a big wine, lots of plum and blackberry, and there's a herby quality to it that's interesting. Goes great with pizza or pasta with a meaty sauce. Not the cheapest but you can taste the quality.
