Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block 2024: A Red of Genuine Distinction
Red 14.5% ABV ABV BoekenhoutskloofPerfect dinner party wine
Bought this for a dinner party last weekend and it went down really well. Loads of dark fruit and chocolate flavour, and it's smooth enough that even my mate who normally drinks lager enjoyed it. At about £26 it's not an everyday bottle but it's great for occasions.
Really enjoyed this with pizza night
Saw this on a list somewhere and grabbed a bottle to try. It's a big red with lots going on — berries, cedar, a bit of liquorice. Goes surprisingly well with pepperoni pizza. The 14.5% ABV does creep up on you though, just a heads up.
Bit pricey for what it is
It's nice enough, don't get me wrong. Dark cherry, spice, decent finish. But nearly £26 for a South African blend? I've had similar wines for a tenner less. Would drink it again if someone else was buying but probably wouldn't repurchase myself.
The name doesn't lie
You genuinely get chocolate in this, it's not just marketing. Dark chocolate and plum with some spice — kind of like Christmas in a glass. Had it with a slow-cooked lamb shoulder and it was absolutely banging. Already ordered another couple of bottles.
Birthday treat that delivered
My wife got me this for my birthday and I loved it. It's got this gorgeous dark fruit and spice thing going on, really warming. The finish lingers nicely too — you keep tasting it after each sip. One of the best reds I've had under £30 honestly.
Solid red, nothing to complain about
The wine shop guy recommended this when I said I wanted something full-bodied but not too heavy. He was spot on — it's rich with plummy, chocolatey flavours but doesn't sit like a brick in your stomach. Good with a steak, good on its own. Fair price for the quality.
