First Impressions

Bodegas Cecchin Carignan 2023 arrives at £13.95 for 75cl, and at this price, it needs to offer genuine quality to stand out in a crowded market. Hailing from Mendoza, Argentina, this organic red wine boasts notes of blackcurrants, raspberries, and sweet spices that perfectly complement meat dishes.

Argentina's wine scene has matured significantly, moving beyond simple Malbec to explore altitude, terroir, and lesser-known grape varieties with impressive results. Cecchin is a name worth knowing in this context.

Olivia Park VIPsAllowed - Bit much for me
5/10

The wine shop guy recommended this and I wanted to like it more than I did. It's quite heavy and earthy — I think I just prefer something lighter and fruitier. My partner loved it though so maybe it's just not my thing.

Luna Chavez VIPsAllowed - Not bad but not amazing
5/10

It's fine. Dark fruit, bit of spice, decent enough. But honestly for £14 I've had better reds — felt a bit too tannic for my taste and I couldn't really get past that. Might work better with food.

Maxwell Green VIPsAllowed - Decent dinner party wine
6/10

Served this at a dinner party with lamb and it went down well. Nothing mind-blowing but it's got enough complexity to keep things interesting. The spicy finish got a few comments. Good value for entertaining.

Penelope Hart VIPsAllowed - Solid red for the price
7/10

Picked this up from my local wine shop on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Loads of dark cherry flavour and a nice spicy finish that kept me going back for more. At under £14 this is a proper bargain for a midweek treat.

Grace Kim VIPsAllowed - Interesting grape variety
7/10

Never had a Carignan before so thought I'd give this a go. Really liked the cedar and tobacco notes that came out after letting it breathe for a bit. Felt like a more interesting wine than you'd expect at this price point. Would buy again.

Noah Williams VIPsAllowed - Birthday bottle that delivered
8/10

Got this as part of a mixed case for my birthday and it was one of my favourites. So much going on — dark cherry, spice, even something almost smoky on the finish. At 13% it's not too boozy either. Already ordered more.

Luciano Bianchi VIPsAllowed - Good with steak night
6/10

Bought this for our Friday steak night and it did the job nicely. The blackcurrant and cherry came through well and the tannins worked great with the meat. Wouldn't necessarily drink it on its own though.

Thomas Weber VIPsAllowed - Great once it opens up
7/10

First glass I thought it was just okay but by the second pour this really opened up. The cherry and blackcurrant got richer and there was this lovely warmth from the baking spices. Give it 20 minutes in the glass and it's a different wine. Impressive for under £14.
