Barbadillo Pedro Ximenez La Cilla: A Sip of History
Fortified 17.5% ABV ABV BarbadilloSolid PX for the price
I've had a few Pedro Ximenez sherries and this is a solid one for under £15. You get the classic raisin and prune thing but there's a roasted almond flavour that gives it a bit more going on. Finish goes on forever. Would buy again.
Nice but very sweet
Got recommended this by a guy in Majestic and it's decent. Lots of prune and caramel going on, almost like a liquid Christmas pudding. I liked it but my partner thought it was too sweet. Good with cheese though.
Not really my thing
Tried this at a friend's house and it was a bit much for me. Very intense molasses and dried fruit flavours. I can see why people like it but I think I prefer something lighter. The almond nuttiness was nice though.
Absolute stunner
Picked this up on a whim and wow. The finish just keeps going — warm spice and dried fruit that hangs around for ages. At 17.5% you definitely feel the warmth but it's not harsh at all. Already ordered another bottle.
Brilliant with blue cheese
I keep going back to this bottle. The dried apricot and caramel are gorgeous and it's got this salty edge that stops it being sickly. Poured it over vanilla ice cream the other night too and honestly life changing. Great value for a PX.
Decent for after dinner
Had this after a dinner party and it was alright. Quite treacly and rich which I expected from a fortified wine. I thought the salty thing people mention about Barbadillo was interesting but honestly I'd probably spend the £15 on a nice red instead. One for special occasions maybe.
Christmas Day winner
Bought this for Christmas Day dessert and it was a massive hit. Really rich and nutty with loads of dried fruit flavour. The sweetness isn't over the top either which surprised me for a fortified wine. At £15 it's staying on the Christmas list.
